Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Design Competition

The competition scheme for an addition to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia created a large entry plaza by locating the new gallery spaces within a long free span bar building across a dynamic plaza surface from the existing museum. A transparent glass bridge spanning from the existing gallery spaces to the new gallery spaces, allowing for a seamless museum experience. The new building is informed by its context while actively reconfiguring it. The required parking was submerged below ground to allow the new plaza space to connect the street to the sculpture garden beyond.
