New York Public Library Design Competition

This project addresses a new condition of vertical space and surface in the public urban environment for the Mid-Manhattan Branch of the New York Public Library. Typically, public space is confined within the horizontal ground floors of buildings. This proposal develops a new programmatic form of library organization by stretching the sequence of public spaces vertically so that as the user proceeds up through the building, they encounter circulation and gathering spaces—creating a central public core.
