Located
in one of the densest areas of Lower Manhattan, Louise Nevelson Plaza is a
triangular, public open space bounded by Maiden Lane on the north, Liberty
Street on the south, and William Street on the west. Its most prominent elements
are several large metal sculptures donated by the Artist to the City. The
Plaza has been re-designed as a center for this emerging mixed-use neighborhood.
The shift in the fundamental nature of the area around the Plaza requires
an upgrade in the available open space for evening and weekend use. The
main elements of the Plaza will include: improved open space, accessible from
all directions; a raised granite plinth at the western end of the Plaza designed
to frame the largest sculpture and provide ample seating along its perimeter;
better and more abundant planting; improved paving materials; a re-designed
security booth for the Federal Reserve Bank relocated outside of the pedestrian
areas of the Plaza; and inviting glass benches lit from below at night. The
sculptures will be cleaned and restored to their original condition.
