Cornell University Visitors Center

Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects were commissioned to prepare a comprehensive Feasibility Study for the redevelopment of the Student Visitors’ Center for Cornell University, and subsequently to begin the schematic design process for a new building on the site.

Cultural history, specificity of site, and material technology are important issues for the project at this important site on the Cornell University campus. Research and development of material technologies appropriate to this site at Cornell University are part of the ongoing process of design. Specifically, material technology issues here concern two seemingly divergent paths of investigation –one a use of face building materials on the campus which are part of the historical development and current identity of the campus together with the University’s investment of and identification with new technology.
