MEGAPHONE: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION NATIONAL MONUMENT USED AS POSTER FOR FRANCE
A photo of the Megaphone, originally installed at New York's Battery Park City landfill in 1984, and reinstalled at Foley Square in 2004, was used as a poster for this year's "Week of Press and Media at School" in France. The theme, "Freedom of Expression can be Learnt" is in response to the attacks against the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in January 2015 and the November 2015 attacks in Paris.

A ROOF GROWS IN BRONX...
Photographer Michael Moran captured the green roof on Zerega EMS Station in its first season of growth. The roof serves as a living "fifth facade" for residents of the neighboring high rise tower, reduces storm water run-off, provides added acoustic and thermal insulation, and is visible from the street.

SMH + U project "The Dillon", an 83-unit housing unit combining maisonette, duplex, triplex, and studio apartments, is featured in the Arch Moscow exhibition in parallel with the 4th Moscow Biennale of Architecture. Christian Uhl, Laurie Hawkinson, and Hyunchang Cho designed a new library loft in a private residence in Soho. The renovation accommodates a spectacular book collection, sleeping loft, and informal living room.

HENRY SMITH-MILLER NAMED AIA FELLOW
Henry Smith-Miller has been named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. The Fellowship program recognizes those architects who have made a significant contribution to architecture and society and who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Henry will be honored among 130 other architects elected to the prestigious College of Fellows this year at the 2014 National AIA Convention in Chicago.

ZEREGA AVE. EMS STATION WINS IDEAS2 AWARDS
Zerega Ave EMS Station wins a Certificate of Recognition from the American Institue for Steel (AISC) for 2014 IDEAS2 Awards. The institute’s annual IDEAS2 awards programme is the highest honour bestowed upon building projects by the structural steel industry in the United States, and conducted annually by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Robert Silman Associates collaborated on the structural steel works all through the building.

The Dillon wins AIA Award

SMH+'s recent condominium project on West 53rd Street was cited for an Award of Merit by the 2012 AIA New York State Design Awards Jury. The project will be featured along with the other winning projects at the AIA New York State annual convention in Saratoga Springs from September 27-29.

Corning Museum Renovation to Open This Summer

A renovation to the digital theater in SMH+'s 1999 addition to the Corning Museum of Glass (pictured below) is scheduled to open this summer. SMH+ is redesigning the digital theater to accommodate a live hot glassmaking show.

SMH+ Farnsworth Project Published in Museum Catalogue

The Farnsworth Museum published a book of ten proposals re-imagining the Farnsworth Homestead for the 21st century. SMH+ proposed a pre-fabricated "lifted homestead," with views out to sea and a landscaped roof.

The proposals are also on exhibit at the Farnsworth Museum through September 23, 2012.

SMH+ designs homestead for Farnsworth Museum

SMH+ was one of ten architectural firms asked to design a home for the Farnsworth family, who lived in 19th Century Rockland, Maine, re-imagining them as a contemporary family. SMH+'s house, the Lifted Homestead, is a prefabricated house made out of the extremely light and strong materials of racing sailboat construction. The house is 'lifted' on stilts to provide a view out to sea, and features a landscaped roof that is home to a small family of goats and sheep.

The exhibit is at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, through September 23.

Proposal to grow Manhattan island in Architect's Newspaper

A joint studio last fall called "Speculation," run by Laurie Hawkinson and Vishaan Chakrabarti, director of GSAPP's Real Estate Development program, brought together collaborative teams of Architecture and Real Estate students. One proposal, pictured below, developed by Real Estate students Leigh D’Ambra and Scott Hayner with architecture students Wilson and Muchan Park proposed creating a sixth borough extending off the tip of lower Manhattan and around Governors Island. The studio was featured in the Architect's Newspaper and in Urban Omnibus.

Gates arrive at 53rd Street

Custom steel screens and gates are currently being installed at 405 West 53rd Street. Each gate defines an exterior buffered fore-court at the building's nine Maisonette entrances. The mesh was fabricated by Cambridge Architectural Mesh and the units fabricated and installed by Martel Design & Fabrication in Brooklyn.

West 53rd St. Condominium appears in Architectural Record

The Dillon, an SMH+ designed condominium for the SDS Procida Development Group, was reviewed in the April 2011 Architectural Record. The project, located at 405 West 53rd Street in Hell's Kitchen, stacks skip-stop floor thru units on maisonettes, creating a building section of remarkable economy and 52 unique layouts.

Massena certified LEED Silver

SMH+'s Land Port of Entry in Massena, New York, a design excellence project for the U.S. GSA, received official LEED Silver certification.

Throughout the border station, environmentally conscious solutions and techniques for site and buildings were seamlessly woven into the overall design strategy, and the composition of buildings and roads is carefully integrated within native and created wetland areas to maintain an ecological balance at the site.

Louise Nevelson Plaza opens to public

SMH+'s redesign of Louise Nevelson Plaza opens to the public this week. The project, which features custom-designed glass benches and a new landscape, grew out of a master plan for Lower Manhattan SMH+ created for the LMDC. The plaza, located at Maiden Lane and William St., contains several sculptures by the artist Louise Nevelson.
